CAMERON, Alan It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing on January 7, 2014, of our well-loved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Alan Freeman Cameron. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sylvia (nee Yurkiw), sons Jim (Sonja), Rick (Susan), Dan (Yuping), Tom (Kelcey), and Ken (Marilyn), daughter Ellen (Dan) Voth, 17 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Alan was predeceased by his first wife Mary (nee Cross), his daughter Lynne, brothers Wallace and Griffith, and sister Olive Johnson. Alan was born July 22, 1926 to Jamie and Lotus Cameron. Growing up in Victoria, Alan spent much time at the family cabin at Cordova Bay. He enjoyed swimming, bike riding, soap box building and sweets of all kinds. After completing schooling at Sir James Douglas and Victoria High Schools, Alan joined the Canadian Army as a "Boy Soldier" in 1943. His long and varied career included logging, a moving company, managing a small resort and owning a shoe store 'Foot Prince' after moving to Osoyoos in 1965 and purchasing an orchard. In 1972 Alan and Sylvia settled in Kelowna where Alan sold real estate and eventually became a mortgage appraiser for Royal Trust until his retirement. Alan was active in many clubs and organizations including volunteering for the Canadian Diabetic Association, CNIB, Cancer Clinic and the Military Museum. He was a life-long member of the Royal Canadian Legion, always there for the honour guard until his health failed him. One of Alan's greatest pleasures in life was fishing whenever he had a chance, whether it was salt water salmon fishing or fresh water trout fishing. He liked tinkering in his shop, painting signs and decorations and woodcrafting. He regularly partook in a good, stiff scotch, saying with a twinkle in his eye, 'just two fingers, please'. Alan's family left a lasting legacy in Victoria, the Cameron Bandshell in Beacon Hill Park. Alan and Sylvia enjoyed trips to Yellowstone Park, Disneyland, Reno, the Maritimes and visited Europe while his son Jim was stationed in Germany. He went to many 'Boy Soldier' reunions and looked forward to trips doing 'The Loop' through Alberta and Saskatchewan to see relatives and friends. Highlights in his later years were semi-annual family reunions in Seebe, AB and as his health became fragile, his family came to him. Alan rarely complained of the pain he endured and smiled through it all. Our family sincerely thanks Dr. Chris Livingston, and the caring staff at Three Links Manor and then Mountainview Village. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Canadian Diabetic Association would be appreciated. A Celebration of Life will be held in Alan's honour in April. "We rise again in the faces of our children. Verna was born in Kamloops, but grew up at Tranquille TB Sanitorium as her dad was Chief Cook there. She graduated from Nursing and worked at Hospitals in Vancouver, Alberta, and Kamloops. She was a Program Director for the City of Kelowna, and worked eight years for BC Housing. She loved to travel down the west coast of the USA and across Canada, as well as forty trips with Wells Grey Tours. Verna was very kind, always happy, loved her work and her family very much. HUSKA, Peter It is with great sadness that we share the peaceful passing of Peter Huska on January 10, 2014 at the age of 75. He will be missed and forever loved by his wife Pam of 42 years; his daughter Kyla Babcock and husband Chris; his son Ryan Huska and wife Denise; along with six adored grandchildren: Alan, Isobel and Joseph Babcock and Hanna, Olivia and Luke Huska. He will also be remembered by his very close and loving brothers and sisters: Anne Flynn (Murray), Paul Huska (Red), Marla Borsa (Bob), Edna Senko (Henry) and Raymond Huska (Lourene) and many nieces, nephews and friends. Peter was born in Grandview, Manitoba on February 19, 1938. In 1957, he embarked on a 31 year career with the RCMP, stationed for all of his service in BC. Early in his career, Peter was assigned to police the "Sons of Freedom Doukhobors" out of Nelson, BC, where this newly formed D Squad made provincial history in policing. Peter was then posted to the British Columbia Pavilion at Expo '70 in Osaka, Japan. It is here that he met his loving wife Pam. Peter and Pam married in 1971 and were stationed in Chilliwack, Nelson, Cranbrook and Trail. After retiring from the RCMP, Peter worked for the Provincial Government in the Liquor Control Branch. During his retirement, Peter loved travelling to Arizona each winter, visiting Haystack Rock on the Oregon Coast and exploring other parts of the world. Peter was an avid hockey fan and wouldn't miss a Rockets' game. Other hobbies included gardening, walking, puttering around the house and going for coffee with this friends. Most importantly Peter loved spending time with his family. Peter will be remembered for his big smile, sense of humour and his love of life. He loved his family and his friends unconditionally. He will be dearly missed, but our memories will stay with us forever. Our sincere thank you goes out to Dr. Marty Steinruck for his care and friendship to Peter over the years. ALLAN, Gordon Ross Nov 9,1954 - January 5, 2014 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Gordon Ross Allan. Gord was predeceased by his father Robert Allan (1985), nephew Connor Fennessy (2008) and very recently Auntie Kay & cousin Wendy. Gord leaves to mourn his mother Eileen, brother Gary (Monique), sisters Debra Penney (Tony), Lori Fennessy (Kevin), his daughter Raechel Murray (Scott), nephews Justin Allan & Chase Fennessy, nieces Casey Fennessy & Kara Bruno (Pat), great nephew Jake & great niece Elizabeth and his wonderful friend Melanie. He also leaves behind friends that he has made all across the country including, his long time good friend Bob Chmilar. Although Gord had been battling cancer since July 2012, his battle was going well. He was still extremely active at home and was no where near the end of his battle, when an unexpected medical crisis suddenly took him from us. Cancer brought him a new outlook on life and he still had goals to fulfill before he was ready to quit. He never wanted sympathy and always maintained that he was just fine. He was a gentle giant with a big voice that couldn't be ignored when he entered a room. He will be missed by many. We would like to thank the many Dr's, Nurses & support staff at KGH, BCCA, VGH. The staff and volunteers at the Jean C Barber Lodge and the BC Ambulance Services for their help during Gord's illness. Predeceased by her parents Joe and Helen and her brother Frank. Elsie was born on March 9, 1933 in Hawk Lake, Ontario. She attended Dryden High School and after graduation moved to Toronto to enrol in nursing studies at the St. Joseph Hospital, graduating as an R.N. Her career included private duty nursing at major Toronto Hospitals and private residences. After her marriage to Allan, in 1957, she worked as Assistant Head Nurse, Medical, at East General Hospital and also at Providence Villa Geriatric Hospital, Scarborough, Ontario. A Prayer Service will be held on Thursday, January 16th at 7:00 pm, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, January 17th at 10:30 am both at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 839 Sutherland Ave., Kelowna, BC. BORCH, Cynthia Karen February 28, 1960 - January 9, 2014 The family of Cynthia Karen Borch announces her sudden passing with deep sadness. She is survived by her children, Nelson, Curtis, and Samantha Chapman; her beloved grandson Sawyer; her cherished sister Lisa (Tim); her brothers, Graham (Linda), Nelson (Liz), and Michael (Andrea); her parents Vince and Carol; and many nephews, nieces, uncles, aunts, and friends. All will mourn the loss of her. Cynthia's life was filled with passion and accomplishment. As an adult she furthered her education with a diploma from Okanagan University College, established a successful career with the Canada Revenue Agency, and completed the Kelowna Marathon. Throughout all these activities she provided, maintained, and renovated a home while raising three children as a single mom. Her intensely competitive spirit in sports and games was balanced by her ready laughter and her joy in life and music. Cynthia will be remembered for her loving and affectionate heart, being quick to hug, and for improving everything and everyone she touched. WHITE, Barbara E. (nee ECKERSLEY) Mar. 27, 1927 - Jan. 8, 2014 Barbara passed into eternal rest on January 8, 2014, in her 87th year, in the Webber Community of the Village at Smith Creek (VSC) nursing home in West Kelowna, BC. Born March 27, 1927 at Temagami, ON, first child of W.L. Eckersley and Muriel Hindson; survived by husband Jim; daughter Laurie Carter (Bruce Kemp) of Westbank, BC; son Geoffrey (Kelly) of Peterborough, ON; brother Pat (Virginia) of Milton, ON, and brother Bill (Diane) of Toronto, ON. In addition Barbara had three grandchildren; Brandie, Jordon and James: two great grandchildren, Alex and Sophie. Barbara was a graduate, 1948, BA, University of Western Ontario via Waterloo Lutheran College. She became a secondary school teacher of English and a library specialist. Over 35 years she taught in Englehart, ON; Bradford, ON; Val-d'Or, QC; Toronto, ON; Woodstock, ON; and Grimsby, ON. Barbara met Jim White, a student at the Provincial Institute of Mining in 1949. They were married in 1951 in Kitchener, ON. Barbara selflessly supported Jim through university and made several moves in her own teaching career to support the man she loved. Both Barbara and Jim ended long teaching careers in Grimsby, ON and subsequently moved to Westbank, BC, in 1996. Barbara was wholly devoted to her family and her students. She was fondly referred to as "Mom" by students of the Grimsby Secondary School Band for which she was "Band Mother" as chaperone on band excursions and general supervisor of various fundraising drives. Barbara was a founding member of the Grimsby Auxiliary Marine Rescue Unit (GAMRU). For many years she acted as dispatcher for the unit, which operated out of Grimsby harbour as a unit of the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary. Barbara and Jim settled in Sun Village, Westbank, BC, in 1996. After some considerable travelling by camper van about the Interior of BC, Barbara became increasingly affected by a dementia. She was admitted to the VSC in January 2008 and became a much-loved resident of the Webber Community. The family is forever indebted and grateful to the staff of VSC, Baptist Housing, for the devoted, tender care they gave Barbara for six long years. Service at St. George's Anglican Church, 3690 Brown Rd., Westbank, at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, January 16, 2014. No flowers, please. Donations to the Alzheimer's Society would be appreciated.

LACINA, FRANCIS JOSEPH March 12, 1918 - January 10, 2014 Our dear Father and Papa passed away on January 10, 2014 surrounded by loved ones. After 95 years, Fran is now at peace, reunited with his cherished wife Joyce (1919-2012). Fran was admired as a cheerful, loving, wise example to all. Born on the homestead in Valley Centre, Sask. in 1918, he later trained at Normal School in Saskatoon. He taught in many small prairie schools, eventually bringing his young family to Penticton in 1948. He then taught at Pen High and at Argyle SS in North Vancouver, retiring back to Vernon and Kelowna communities in 1982. Highly resourceful, Fran enriched his life with family and friends, music, poetry, gardening, travelling, faith and helping of others. His children, Karen Self (Brian), Doug Lacina (Nelma) Gwen Doi (Gary), his grandchildren, Rodger, Michael, Darren, Renee, Carolyn, Heather, and their families, will miss him deeply. The family thanks the Good Samaritan staff at Mountainview Village, Kelowna for their great kindness and caring over the past six years. HOLOWIESKI, HELEN (Chepluk) It is with great sadness the family of Helen Holowieski announces her peaceful passing on January 8, 2014 at the age of 102. Helen was born a coal miner's daughter in Calgary and as a young child moved to a farm in the Thorhild Alberta area. She met her husband Brownie there and the two were married in 1929. They farmed in the area and then homesteaded in Athabasca, Alberta. In 1956 they gave up farming to purchase a rooming house in Penticton, BC. Helen managed the rooming house, worked in the fruit packing industry and was a homemaker. She also enjoyed organic gardening and quilting. She was active in the community until her later years. Helen always enjoyed welcoming relatives and friends to their home in Penticton. Helen is survived by her sister, Lucy Dubeta, relatives in the Ukraine, many nieces and nephews and many friends throughout Canada. She was predeceased by her parents, John and Lucy, by her husband in 2003, by her sister, Faye in 2009 and brothers, Joe, Frank and Bill. Her family would like to thank Dr. John Hughes for his compassion over the many years as well as the staff at Concorde Assisting Living Facility and the staff at Haven Hill Retirement Center. A Funeral Ceremony will be held on Friday, January 17, 2014 at 1:00 pm at the Parkview Chapel, 1258 Main Street, Penticton, BC. Burial will be held in Egremont, Alberta at a later date. ASTON, ETHEL LORRAINE March 17th, 1917 - January 11th, 2014 Alas, Lorraine Aston passed away January 11th with her family by her side at the age of 96. A cherished matriarch, she will be forever remembered by her children; Cheryl Thompson and Wiz Bryant, brother, Ian (Bud) Brockway, numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She is predeceased by her first husband, Major TW Thomas Wisner (Wiz) Bryant, and second husband, Cecil Aston. Lorraine was born in Toronto, on March 17th, 1917. She is the daughter of Helen Fraser and William Brockway of Beauly, Scotland and Winchester, England. She was the third of nine siblings including Margery, Betty, Jean, Lillian, Evelyn, George, Jim and Ian Brockway. After moving to Prince Rupert with her family as a teen, she met her first husband and they were married in 1940. After being separated during WW II, they settled in Penticton in 1946. She returned to a career in the fashion industry after having her children at home, and became a legendary friendly face in downtown Penticton, working until the age of 91. Her orchard and gardens brought Lorraine true fulfillment, which she shared from her home on the Naramata Bench with welcomed visitors - family or new friend. A talented artist, Lorraine created beautiful ceramics and needle point. She was a loyal Rotary Ann and dedicated IODE member. A few special dogs and cats (like Silver, Tinker, Buffy, Skipper and Mumsey) had the good fortune of sharing her company over the years. Her nature loving spirit will always be remembered with the feel of pussy willows and the smell of lilacs in the spring. A Celebration of Life will be held 1:00 pm on Saturday, January 18th, 2014 at Saint Saviour's Anglican Church, 150 Orchard Avenue East with The Reverent Canon Mike Stuchbery and The Venerable Peter O'Flynn officiating.
