kenneth george whitby march 22...
KENNETH GEORGE WHITBY March 22, 1921 - May 04, 2013 We are grateful for the long life shared with us as we announce the peaceful passing of Kenneth George Whitby, in his 93rd year. Ken lived his life with a strong sense of service to others, honesty, respect, generosity and love of his family and friends. On June 24th Ken and his bride Eluned Anne (nee Thomas) would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. Ken and Anne met at St Paul's Anglican Church in Halifax where they were both members of the Anglican Young Peoples Association. He is lovingly remembered by his daughter Angharad Gwynne Whitby-Thomas, and son Ed Whitby (Shirley Hartwell). Treasuring their "Grampa" memories are his granddaughter Stacy Delpierre-Thomas (Tony Delpierre) and great grandchildren Alyshia, Max and Nikki. Dad was the last of his generation in the Whitby family, predeceased by his sister Mary Evelynn (Samuel Findlay) in 1988 and brother Ernest E. R. Relf Whitby (Margaret MacDonald) in 1992. He is also remembered by his nieces and nephews Barbara Findlay (Ray Singer), Allan Findlay (Kathy Smith), Susan Leroy, Paul Whitby (Patti), Michael Whitby, Chris Thomas (Christie) and Heather Cameron (Mel). Ken was also brother-in-law to Sandra Thomas of Halifax, NS. Dad was born and raised in Niagara Falls, ON. He began his work experiences by being one of the first paper carriers for the Globe and Mail in the "Falls". As a proud member of the RCAF his travels took the family to England, Goose Bay, NL, Halifax, NS, southern Quebec, southern Ontario and more. Leaving Burlington, ON to follow the adventures of Gwynne and Ed, Ken and Anne moved to the west coast in June 1981 where they settled in Abbotsford, Penticton and finally to White Rock in order to be closer to their family. After his primary career in the Air Force, Ken who was always proud to wear his uniform, retired to a variety of positions, none more treasured than his position with the Commissionaires. He was a member of one of the first security teams at the current BC Children's Hospital where he always said they were the finest people he'd ever met. Dad's involvement with Air Force Association of Canada Wing 861 (Abbotsford) and South Okanagan Wing 890 (Penticton) was something he loved and where he has made many friends over the years. Dad believed in the work of the Air Cadets and has been acknowledged for his contribution to the 259 Squadron. His strong sense of community was demonstrated further by 85 blood donations to the Red Cross, delivering for Meals on Wheels, the Anglican Church, Abbotsford Traffic Safety Advisory Committee and so much more. Dad loved the world of transportation in all its forms particularly rail travel. Dad was thrilled to have the opportunity to ride on the Royal Hudson a few times and when the train came to White Rock during the Olympics he was at the front of the line. He loved to hear the sounds of the train outside his home at Evergreen Care Home and would take any opportunity to go to the beach and watch the trains go by. Thank you to Kathy, Vicky, Juanita and their team at Evergreen Care Home. The heart and caring you share every day is appreciated by all of us. Dad, we will miss you and wish you "High Flight" all the way. A memorial will be held at St. Marks Anglican Church, 12953 20th Avenue, South Surrey, BC, on May 16, 2013 at 2:00 pm. There will be a celebration of Dad's life to be held in Penticton at a future date. Donations of remembrance may be made to the BC Children's Hospital Legacy Fund in Vancouver (contact Diane Haarstad).

skutshek, eugenie (jean) it is...
SKUTSHEK, Eugenie (Jean) It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of Eugenie (Jean) Skutshek, on Saturday, May 4, 2013, at Hospice House in Kelowna, BC, 32 days short of her 82nd birthday and 19 days short of her 60th wedding anniversary. She was surrounded by her husband, sister and three children as she passed quietly from this life to the next. Her body succumbed to ovarian cancer, which she battled valiantly for more than three years. Left to mourn her loss and treasure her memories are husband Paul, son Edward (Denise), daughter Desiree, son Paul (Gordon), grandsons Jonathan and Noah, sister Vera Lueck and numerous nieces and nephews. Jean is predeceased by her mother Alma and father Edward Politz, and her brother Leo Politz. Jean was born in the village of Horstschick, in the Ukraine, June 5th, 1931. The winds of World War II blew her from the Ukraine to Germany. She underwent many trials and tribulations during the war years, often narrowly escaping death at the hand of a bullet, bomb or starvation. She spent much of the war years separated from her parents. Her father Edward did not survive the war. She emigrated to Canada in 1951 and settled in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She earned her living as a maid and then a seamstress. On May 23, 1953, she married Paul Skutshek, whose family had lived in the same village in the Ukraine and who had immigrated to Winnipeg at the same time. During their years in Winnipeg, Paul and Jean worked tirelessly to realize the Canadian dream of home ownership, advancement in life and the establishment of family (their three children were born from 1956-62). In 1968, they moved to Kelowna. Paul and Jean established a successful construction and development business under the name "Paul Construction". Husband Paul drew plans and built homes and commercial buildings, while Jean kept the business' books and kept the home fires burning. Paul and Eugenie retired in 1988. From 1968 to 2001, the two were active members of Christ Lutheran Church. Jean sang in the church choir for many years. She was active in Christ Lutheran's women's group and was instrumental in planning and convening numerous events at Christ Lutheran over those years. In 2001, Jean and Paul joined Grace Lutheran Church on the Westside, as their eldest son Edward had accepted a call to be pastor of the congregation. Paul and Jean remained active in church life at Grace Lutheran. They spent countless hours in worship, Bible study and fellowship. Eugenie remained active in Grace Lutheran's women's group and was involved in planning and convening church events as long as her health would allow. The Skutshek family would like to express sincere gratitude to the staff of Kelowna Hospice House for the loving and tender care given to our beloved "Jeanie." We would also like to express sincere thanks and gratitude to the volunteers and staff of the Kelowna Cancer Center for the care given to Jean, most notably, Dr. Taylor and Dr. Docherty. We cannot thank her family physician Dr. Michael Bobyn enough for the care he has given our beloved Jeanie, most especially during her last days. Friends wishing to pay their last respects and offer condolences to the family are invited to a viewing at Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road in Kelowna, on Monday, May 13 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A service celebrating a life well lived and a woman well loved will be held on Wednesday, May 15 at 11:00 AM at Grace Lutheran Church, 1162 Hudson Road, West Kelowna, BC, (250) 769-5685. We will remember and celebrate who she was and whose she is. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.springfieldfuneralhome.com 250-860-7077
