CAVENDISH, KEN: RESIDENT OF KA...

CAVENDISH, Ken: Resident of Kaleden since 1965, died peacefully at home, as he wished, on Sunday, July 5, 2015. Following a happy childhood in Bournemouth, England, he joined the Royal Navy at 17 and served as a Submariner, Gun Layer, from '42 - '45. He took part in the Midget submarine deployment off the coast of France that preceded D-Day. In 1946 he married Evelyn Boulger, a WREN, and had two daughters, Alison and Nicola. The family emigrated to Canada in 1957, where their son Mark was born. Following a career in Catering to the workers for the Emergency Warning System being set up across northern Canada, he served as an Immigration Officer at Osoyoos Port for 25 years. He loved Kaleden, and was always grateful to Canada for the life it had made possible. Dad was gregarious, generous, warm and caring, and he loved a good story and knew how to tell it. He was a fine, gentle man with a rollicking sense of humour. Above all he was authentic. He cherished his late wife, Evelyn but was content that he had his 3 robust grown up kids to care for him. He will be deeply missed by so many including granddaughter Bronwyn, and great granddaughter Similkameen. His family meant everything to him. WE would like to thank all of his many friends and fellow veterans who were so supportive over the last 3 years of poor health. In particular the Palliative care nurses who provided outstanding care. As Mark says, "He had more life left to live but his boat had too many holes". He will forever be loved. A gathering will take place in the Early Fall, date yet to be confirmed.

WHITE, James, G.: August 9, 1927 - July 12, 2015. WHITE, James George. Jim passed into eternal rest on July 12, 2015, in his 88th year, at Hospice House in Kelowna, BC. Born August 9, 1927 at Swansea, ON (Toronto), first child of James White Sr. and Vera Mashinter White; survived by daughter Laurie Carter (Bruce Kemp) of Westbank, BC; son Geoffrey (Kelly) of Peterborough, ON; siblings Frank, Vera (McMaster), Bob, Dick and Peter, all of Ontario. In addition Jim had three grandchildren: Brandie, Jordon and James: two great grandchildren, Alex and Sophie. Jim spent most of his early years in Northwestern Ontario and completed Grade 12 at Dryden High School before entering the navy at age 17 in 1945. Following discharge he graduated from the Provincial Institute of Mining in 1950. He met the love of his life, Barbara Eckersley, and the couple married in 1951 at Kitchener, ON. After mining at Malartic, QC, Jim enrolled in Engineering at the University of Toronto and, with Barb's support, graduated in 1960, BSc. Although a P.Eng., he chose a career in secondary education, teaching in Toronto and Woodstock, then serving as vice-principal at Orchard Park in Stoney Creek, and principal at both Waterdown and Orchard Park. When Jim retired in 1986, he turned to volunteerism. Together with Barbara, he worked tirelessly as the founding president of the Grimsby Auxiliary Marine Rescue Unit (GAMRU), a unit of the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary. Jim was active as a director of the Auxiliary, producing and conducting training programs and handling safety inspections in addition to his work with GAMRU. In 1996, he and Barb settled in Sun Village, Westbank, BC, and Jim was able to indulge his passion for the outdoors as fisherman, hiker and snowshoer. When Barb was admitted to the Village at Smith Creek in 2008 (and Jim moved to Westwood Retirement Resort), he immediately became involved in life at VSC, participating in singalongs, serving meals to residents, taking an active role in support groups, growing tomatoes and geraniums for fundraisers and personally tending the Webber Community garden - even after Barbara's passing in 2014. Jim was an active member of St. George's Anglican Church, reading lessons, lending his rich bass to the music he loved and using his woodworking skills on various projects. He was well known for his ability to make or fix things and quietly generous with his time and resources in helping family and friends. Jim was a member of the CORD Emergency Plan Amateur Radio Team and refined his equipment and skills right up to his last camping trip. Many will remember Jim as the bushman who introduced them to our beautiful backcountry on trails he mapped and worked to maintain. He was a big man in every sense, a true Renaissance Man, interested in science, literature, music, engineering, nature and, most of all, people. Jim had a strong moral compass; he could be tough, but also fair and wise. The pain of his loss is softened by the wonderful memories Jim White gave to everyone who knew him. Service at St. George's Anglican Church, 3690 Brown Rd., West Kelowna at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 25, 2015. No flowers, please. Donations to the Central Okanagan Hospice Association would be appreciated.

HOLTZ, James R.: It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of James R Holtz on Saturday, July 18th in Grand Forks, B.C. following complications from kidney cancer. Jim was born May 2, 1946 in Moline, Illinois. He attended Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire and received a BA from Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill. In 1968, unable to condone the war in Vietnam, he came to Canada with his first wife, Carol. The U.S.'s loss was Canada's gain. Jim completed his B.Ed at UBC and taught English and Theatre Arts at George Elliot Secondary School in Winfield for 33 years. During this time, he and Carol raised two exceptional daughters, Susan and Rebecca, both of whom Jim was extremely proud. In 1991 Jim remarried and enjoyed 26 amazing years with his second wife Judy Morrice. They loved and complemented each other, enjoying their wonderful friends, their cabin on Shuswap Lake, their acreage in Grand Forks and on many sailing vacations. Theirs was an exceptional love that both he and Judy felt was a rare gift indeed and Judy will treasure always. A man with many interests, Jim was an avid sailor, both racing and for pleasure and was a past Commodore at Kelowna Yacht Club. He was also a motorcycle enthusiast who enjoyed riding throughout his life. In addition he was a coach, a poet, a novelist, a playwright and a gifted actor and director. Truly a renaissance man. Throughout his illness Judy rarely left his side, and together with his daughters, was with him at the end. He will be greatly missed by Judy, Susan and Rebecca, by Rebecca's two sons, Logan and Luke, grandsons who Jim loved dearly. He will also be mourned by a host of friends who will miss his laughter, his stories and wonderful dry humour. A celebration will be held at Kelowna Yacht Club, 1370 Water Street, Kelowna from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Thursday, July 23 to honour Jim with humour and fond memories. Condolences may be sent to: jimholtzfamily@gmail.com

It is with profound sadness and deep appreciation for an extraordinary life well lived that we say our final goodbyes to our dearly beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Dr. Alexander C. Willis was a man who inspired all whose lives he touched with his wisdom, insight, compassion and his great generosity.  He was a natural visionary and pioneer in all his  endeavours.  He began his career as a teacher in rural Alberta where he taught for two years.  Alex then headed to Waterloo to embark on his degree in Optometry. After graduation, Alex set up his .practice of Optometry in Edmonton, Alberta.  There he became a lifetime member of the Optimists club, receiving honors for his participation in addition to being active with the Al Azhar Shriners.  He became a certified hypnotherapist breaking new ground in applications and techniques in his Optometric practice and therapy work.
