FOURNIER, Ronald James: Dec. 2, 1940 June 3, 2015 There are not too many battles Ron Fournier did not win, but with great sadness we announce he lost the courageous fight against esophageal cancer on June 3, 2015. Ron grew up in Haney (Hammond) BC, but escaped to the warm, sunny town of Oliver in 1973. Here Ron planted his roots he cultivated a life of farming, family and friends. Ron was considered a maverick when he and his business partner became the first independent fruit growers to sell directly to retail companies. Years of work crews were indoctrinated into choruses and dance moves to Sweet Caroline and Conway Twitty's You've Never Been This Far Before (Bom Bom Bom). The farm evolved from fruit trees to vines and was the gathering place for hard work, life lessons, good wine and a ton of laughter. The early morning coffee banter along with evening poolside debates, storytelling and solving world affairs were a daily routine
and did we mention good wine? Ron's influence was far reaching, whether you agreed or not. He was politically active running campaigns and even serving time on the hospital board. He also gave to various charities close to his heart; Children's Telethon, Families in Need and more recently, his contribution to raising funds and awareness for ALS. Ron could often be heard yelling out answers to Wheel of Fortune. HIS greatest fortune however, was not in monetary terms it was his love for family, friends and the farm. Ron was a proud member of Fairview Mountain Golf Club for many years, where his comical antics and 26 verbal swing thoughts then repeated, will be remembered and missed by all. Ron was inclusive, lived larger than life and was passionate with all his endeavours. He will be so greatly missed by his family we love you! A celebration of life for Ron will be held at Fairview Mountain Golf Club, Saturday, July 11, 2015 from 5pm to 8pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Desert Valley Hospice Society. Condolences and tributes may be directed to the family by visiting www.nunes-pottinger.com Arrangements entrusted to Nunes-Pottinger Funeral Service & Crematorium, Oliver & Osoyoos.

RETI, PAUL: MAY 24TH, 1919 - J...
Reti, Paul: May 24th, 1919 - June 11th, 2015 Paul Reti passed away peacefully at the age of 96 in Kelowna, BC, with his devoted wife Margaret, at his side - holding hands as they did on their first New Year's Eve together in Budapest, Hungary. Known for his vision, tenacity, relentless energy, yet gentle and philosophical nature, Paul was an inspiration and much loved by all who knew him. Making only friends and never enemies, he was always the consummate diplomat and peacemaker. Born to Bela and Erzsebet, Paul spent his youth in Romania, inseparable from his older brother, Gyuri. As an adult he moved to Budapest and after successfully working for several years, returned to University at night to earn his degree in Foreign Commerce from the University of Budapest. Possessing a unique combination of harmonious negotiating skills and humanitarianism, he quickly rose to the top of the Ministry of Raw Material Imports and Exports for Hungary. In 1957, he and his young family escaped from Hungary for political reasons. They embarked on a new life in Canada, where Paul, a tireless worker, went from his first job in Calgary toiling at menial jobs in a chicken slaughterhouse, to steadily improving his situation by becoming owner of Hillside Grocery and later, Lakeview Variety Store. Lakeview residents still remember his humor and love of storytelling. Financially astute, Paul amassed a portfolio of rental properties. Later in his life, at age 56, he became a residential Real Estate Appraiser until he retired at 75. During this time, he appraised some 36,000 homes. His exceptional family life included Okanagan summers and California winters. Always a man of his word, Paul encouraged his children and grandchildren to be respectful towards all people, regardless of their personal circumstance. He was generous with those less fortunate, from extending credit to needy families in the grocery store, to treating tenants with fairness and loyalty. Paul loved to grow things, like the palm tree seedlings that now tower in his living room and the beautiful blue spruce he chose for his final resting place. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Margaret; four children: Alexander, George (Marilyn), Judith (Roland Plessis), and Elisabeth (Brian Dickinson); twelve grandchildren: (Reti) Natalie, Julianne, Christina, Jordan, Justin, (Plessis) Suzanne, Olivier, Nadine, Isabelle, (Dickinson) Samantha, Anne, and Evan. He also leaves behind an ever-increasing number of great-grandchildren. The loving, equal relationship enjoyed between Paul and Margaret greatly influenced the entire family, earning everyone's respect and admiration. He will be deeply missed by all of us. The family extends very special thanks to the incredible and caring staff at Ethel Glen in Cottonwoods, and all the people who helped us greatly in the last three years of Paul's life journey. SULLIVAN, MARGARET MARY "MARNI...
SULLIVAN, Margaret Mary "Marnie" (nee O'Neill): Margaret was born on June 21, 1923 in Cranbrook, BC and died on June 22, 2015 at 4:00 am after a full and productive life of 92 years. Marnie is welcomed by those who have died before her: her trusted husband of 61 years Herb Sullivan, her many immediate and extended loved family members, along with many friends. She is survived by her loved family, her daughter Mary (Doug) Bullock and grandchildren Paul (Chrystal) Bullock, Richard (Tasha) Bullock and great grandchildren Shea, Declan, Rayna (Brandon) and great great grandchildren Marilyn, Lisa (Greg) Schoeler, Mark (Amanda) Bullock and great grandchild Stella Grace; her son John (Ursula) Sullivan and grandsons Jordan Sullivan and Casey Sullivan; her daughter Tricia (Lyle) Baker and grandchildren Michael Baker, Amber Baker, Iris (Dean) McWhinnie and great grandchildren Isaac and Molly; by her sister Mona (Mac) Sykes, her brother Jim O'Neill, and many extended family members; and by her wonderful friends whom she valued highly. Marnie shone, in her own unique ways, at being a grand and great grandmother. She also loved to cook and fed her family nutritious and interesting meals from a rich repertoire of recipes throughout her lifetime. Marnie worked as a laboratory technician at Kelowna General Hospital and at the Vernon Jubilee Hospital for many years. She also volunteered consistently over her long years of life even into her 90th year. The University Women's Club was very important to her, as all initiatives that furthered the education and economic and legal status of women locally, nationally and globally. Herb once proudly enumerated all of the projects that she had been instrumental in inaugurating or sustaining over the years and the list was long in the telling and included a wide variety of projects that she had put her mind and efforts towards. She also did little things privately for people in a more personal kind of giving. And yes, Marnie could talk! She had so many stories to tell from her travels and about people whom she knew who had done something interesting, extraordinary or funny. She got many of her attitudes towards death from her Irish father. One was to be bothered when people made saints out of those who had died. So, if you knew Marnie, then please find something annoying about her to dwell on for a while along with all of her other exemplary qualities so that she may be remembered as she would have wanted to be! In honour of Marnie's lifetime of dedication to service through volunteering her community, please donate to a charity of your choice. Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, July 4, 215 at 10:30 am at St. Charles Garnier Parish, 3645 Benvoulin Road, Kelowna, BC. Bruce, Barbara E.: October 8, 1920 - May 24, 2015 With great sadness we accept the passing of our wonderful mother, Barbara Ellen Bruce (nee Spencer). Barbara's peaceful, final moments were lovingly attended by both her children. She spent her final seven months in the care of the professional staff at Bastion Place, Salmon Arm. There truly are angels who walk amongst us. Barbara was 94 years old and suffered with Parkinson's disease. Predeceased by her three sisters Louise Newbury, Trudy Felton and Ann Williamson as well as her brother John Spencer, Barbara will be lovingly remembered by her son, Andrew, his wife Jody, and granddaughter Ginger of Kelowna, as well as Barbara's daughter, Kathleen Bruce of Sorrento. She leaves behind brother, Victor Spencer of West Vancouver, sister, Diana Dyer of Ottawa, several nieces, nephews and many friends - notably, Dr. Kristen Kornienko, whose compassionate care enabled Mom to stay at home as long as possible. Barbara was an academic who appreciated music, visual arts, history, literature and journalism. Mom was accepted to study piano at the Royal Conservatory of Music in London, but could not attend due to the outbreak of the Second World War. She took English classes at Radcliff/ Harvard for two years plus a summer, and completed her degree at UBC at home in Vancouver. She was assistant city editor of the Vancouver Sun News Paper during the war and a member of the Canadian Women's Press Club. Post war, Barbara went to the interior of BC to act as managing director for one of her father's cattle ranches, the Circle S Cattle Company, Dog Creek. There she met and married our dad, Lawrence Bruce (pre-deceased 2008). They ranched in Pritchard, BC before moving to Kelowna to raise their family. Barbara was a life time member of the Canadian Hereford Association, a member of the Beef Cattle Growers' Association, as well as former Director of the Cariboo Cattlemen's Association, Williams Lake. She was nominated as a Member of the Senate of the University of British Columbia for years 1963 - 1966. Surprisingly shy and reclusive, Barbara was compassionate, empathetic, loving and strong. She abhorred cruelty, stood up for what she believed in and spoke her mind. She had terrific courage and faith. Mom's departure from this life has left a hollow place in ours but our hearts are full of beautiful memories. We give thanks for her loving, knowledgeable influence and guidance, and we accept with joyous gratitude, Mom's blessed release to a higher existence. Private, family interment. MACKEOWN, GWYN: OCTOBER 6,1929...
Mackeown, Gwyn: October 6,1929-June 26,2015 Gwyn passed suddenly and peacefully on June 26, 2015. She is survived by her loving husband Norm, her two sons Glenn (Jo) Easton, Warren (Annemarie), her step-son Greg (Heather) Mackeown, step-daughters Susan MacKeown, Janice (Terry) MacKeown and seven grandchildren; Karen, Kelsey, Katrina, Jennifer, Maxfield, Naomi and Fennie. As well as sis Belle, brothers Jim, Dave and Bernard. Gwyn is predeceased by her two brothers Horace and Sid, and her sister Gladys. She was a long-time member of the Women's Institute and you would find Gwyn cheerily volunteering at the weekly stock sales in OK Falls. She also volunteered for the Kaleden Recreation Association where, being Gwyn, she simply did what was needed and gave her best. Gwyn grew up in the valley, the daughter of Kaleden pioneers Thomas William and Eveline Marriott. She graduated from Pen High, worked her summers at the Kaleden Co-Op Growers, and loved to swim in Skaha Lake - where years later taking the personal challenge one cool summer morning she swam across it from Kaleden. After attending business college in Vancouver Gwyn worked at VGH, married and raised her family eventually in North Vancouver. During a sojourn in Toronto, Gwyn worked at the Banting and Best Institute of Diabetic Research for Dr. George Best. A BC girl at heart, she returned to Vancouver, remarried embracing three new step-children. She and Norm, with two business friends built two ski chalets in what would become the Municipality of Whistler. Gwyn marvelously could haul, paint and stain boards, sand, clean and build, then cook meals on a Coleman stove at night. Not long after she did it again after she and Norm finally moved back to the valley to build their dream house by Skaha Lake, with their own plans, mainly by their own hands. Their home in Kaleden became the centre of a vibrant social life - Gwyn loved to entertain and she and Norm where consummate hosts. It was the destination all summer long for friends and family, their friends and family, girlfriends and boyfriends of the children, acquaintances - whether they called to announce or just dropped in, Gwyn would be there, welcoming them with astonishing grace and hospitality. A tradition that continued when she moved to Kelowna where she touched the lives of so many in her community as friend, hostess, volunteer and someone who would listen quietly when needed. Gwyn was more than kind-hearted, the rock, the glue solidifying her sometimes far-flung family; she was a beautifully balanced spirit of true compassion and loyal determination. She will be missed by all of us. The family would like to extend a special thank-you to (FR) Viktor Grundel, Spiritual Heath Lead, Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, who in the first hours was invaluable. Friends and Family Celebration of Life to be held at Balmoral Resort Community Clubhouse, 2365 Stillingfleet Rd. Kelowna BC, Thursday, July 2, from 1:00-4:00 PM. KUNZLI, KENNETH WAYNE: JANUARY...
KUNZLI, Kenneth Wayne: January 1, 1947 - June 24, 2015. Kenneth Wayne Kunzli passed away swiftly and peacefully on June 24, 2015 in Kelowna, BC. Fittingly, Ken beat the system even in death; Ken was told in February that cancer would do him in, but after knocking that back, his heart gave out after 68 years of love for his family and friends. Ken spent his last week celebrating what would have been his mother's 100th birthday, Father's Day with his children, and the 6th birthday of his granddaughter Hazel. To his children, Mark, Matthew, Kristi, Michael and Karli, he was Dad, a man who loved them unconditionally, someone who always picked them up when they fell down, and the person who showed them what the true meaning of family was. To his granddaughters, Hazel, Amelia, and Rihlynn, he was Papa, a man who they had only a short time to know, but will have fond memories of for a lifetime. To his siblings, Dan (Madonna) of Halifax, Bill (Susy) of Kelowna, Roberta (Ronnie) Smith of Montreal, and June Mahoney of Kelowna, he was Kenny; the brother who caused many a smile and a shake of the head for them and their deceased parents, Robert and Dorothy Kunzli. To the mothers of his children, Kathy (Mark & Matthew), and Judy (Kristi, Michael & Karli), he was a husband, then a @#$%, but through it all a friend who reserved a special place in his heart for the women that gave him the children he loved above all else. To all his extended family members and friends, he was Ken, a man who they knew they could count on for loyalty and generosity no matter what. Ken was many things to many people, and will be dearly missed by all. The family would like to thank Ken's friends Al, Ned and Dave for their friendship, and the staff at the Central Okanagan Hospice House for their kindness and also their understanding when Ken finally realized his lifetime goal of getting prescribed medical marijuana and pushed the boundaries of where he could take his "medication." While Ken may have drank his last Coke and puffed his last toke, he will live on through all the lives that he touched. Memorial service to be held at 2PM on July 11 at East Kelowna Community Hall followed by a reception, all family and friends are invited to come share their memories.
