CROMBIE, HAZEL H.J. It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Hazel Crombie on Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at Haven Hill Retirement Centre. Hazel was into her 94th year - born, Dec. 10, 1920 at Hespero, Alberta. Hazel leaves her loving family: daughter, Ramona Peterson (nee Lipka); son in law, Jim Peterson, grandson, Kelly Peterson (Willingdon, AB); granddaughter, Kim Peterson (Penticton); great granddaughter, Tessa Peterson (Vancouver); granddaughter, Leah Johnson (Dale); great grandson, Graham Johnson; great granddaughter, Sydney Johnson (Chilliwack); also half-sister, Violet Turner (Alastair) of Eckville, AB; step-daughter, Barbara Crombie of Gibsons, BC and many nieces and nephews in Alberta and British Columbia, cousins in Minnesota and Michigan, USA and in Finland.Hazel was predeceased by husbands, Henry Lipka in 1962 of Evergreen, AB; Laurie Brandson of Eckville, AB and John Crombie in 1979 of Calgary. She was predeceased by her parents, Ida Amanda Maki (Weirimaa) in 1924 and Walter (Valto) Maki in 1954; also predeceased by infant brother, Jhalmer Maki and infant sister, Mary Maki; brothers, Walter Jr. Maki, Arthur Wayne Maki, William (Bill) Maki, and sisters, Elsie Kubik, Mildred Kujala, Florence Bailey and Linnea Lewis. After the untimely death of her husband, Henry Lipka in 1962, Hazel sold their farm in Evergreen, Alberta and attended the School for Nursing Aides in Calgary. She graduated Feb. 23, 1967. She had worked in the Eckville Hospital and in Calgary. After her husband John Crombie died in 1979, Hazel moved to Kelowna, BC. She worked as a Certified Nursing Aide at Oak Lodge Care Facility until she retired at 65. Hazel loved learning and going to school. Unfortunately, when she turned 15 she was not permitted to continue grade 8, because she was required to help on the farm. She studied at home, passed grade 8 and later completed upgrading her education with honours and was accepted at the School for Nursing Aides in Calgary. When Hazel retired she began painting; beginning with lessons from special teacher and special friend, Don Chamberlain, of Victoria, BC at Okanagan College in Kelowna. Then she continued painting with the Pleasure Painters at the Seniors' Centre, Water Street in Kelowna with special teacher and friend, Elizabeth Gregory, of Peachland, for many years.Hazel had an active retirement with her painting classes, playing cards with friends, caring for others who could no longer drive - taking them shopping and to appointments. She visited her friends in the Care Homes in Kelowna and loved to go to garage sales. Hazel always had beautiful roses and a small garden. She loved her little house in Kelowna and never wanted to leave it. She lived there until June 21, 2013 when she came into care at Haven Hill in Penticton. Hazel travelled throughout Europe, Hong Kong, Macau (China) and Mexico with her sister, Florence Bailey; niece and nephew, Diane and George Radics. Then again, in July and Aug. 1998, they visited relatives in Finland, the homeland of both her parents. Her first trip to Europe, however, was with friends from Eckville, Alberta and at that time they met a lovely couple from Hawaii, Margaret and Walter Fugeta, and Hazel kept in touch with them until they passed, and then later continued corresponding with their daughter Carol.Hazel always had a sense of humour and even when moving to Haven Hill, she introduced herself as "Hazel Nut". Hazel's family, particularly Ramona, wish to thank the wonderful staff of Haven Hill Retirement Centre for their care. At times Hazel was challenging - even thinking she was still a Nursing Aide. Thank you also to Dr. A.B. Hignell in Kelowna and Dr. M. Lawrie in Penticton. Also a special mention about "Paws" the cat, resident on the second floor of Haven Hill who sat on Hazel's windowsill and kept a lonely vigil on the morning of Hazel's passing to comfort Ramona. And so to Hazel, our dear Mom, Grandma and Great Grandma - your "shift" is over and your "work load" done, thus we say farewell - we miss you and you will always be in our hearts." As a well spent day brings happy sleep, so life well used brings happy death" - Leonardo da Vinci No service by request. A private family celebration of Hazel's life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favourite charity. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.everdenrust.com

After working as a technologist in support of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at McMaster Health Sciences Center, she obtained her MSc and PhD in Biomedical Sciences at McMaster, researching animal models of cardiovascular disease. She retired in 2007 as Associate Professor, Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine, after helping many local physicians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and nurses gain a better functional understanding of anatomy, wellness and disease. She was a strong believer in the McMaster model of active learning. In retirement she led an active life involving sailing, gardening, woodworking, embroidery and her grandchildren. In keeping with her love of teaching and anatomy, it was Hallie's wish that she continue to help students through bequeathal of her body to a University education program. Therefore there will not be a funeral service as such. A memorial service for family, friends and colleagues will be arranged at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation can be made to the Penticton SPCA.

NISHI, Douglas Yugi March 15, 1948 - April 17, 2014 Doug was born to Sam and Jessie Nishi in Kelowna General Hospital. He grew up on the family property on Gordon Road, now the site of K.L.O. Middle School. With the Shiosaki cousins just down the road, Doug enjoyed family times, especially raising German Shepherds and the New Year's feasts. Doug studied Judo while very young, under the tutelage of his father, Sam, who held one of the most advanced standings in Judo in western Canada. Doug attended the little Mission Creek School on the corner of K.L.O. and Benvoulin Roads, then went on to Dr. Knox, and Kelowna Secondary Schools. He met his future wife, Blanche, at the K.L.O. and Gordon Rd. school-bus stop, having gotten to know her sister, Marjorie, in Chemistry 11 class. They and their friends enjoyed snow-skiing at the then just-developed Big White, water-skiing on the lake, and camping beside it. Doug's big love was for cars...the more "muscle" the better. High-school sweethearts, he and Blanche spent their courting years "on the circuit", that is, City Park-Bernard Ave.-the A & W-Harvey Ave.-City Park...or the reverse! -- usually meeting up with friends at "The Dubs". Doug loved working on his cars and kept everything clean and tidy, and which his cars and home absolutely reflected! Doug left Kelowna in 1967 to take courses in Vancouver, and then spent his working years in Management in Education, Marketing, and Administration with IBM. Doug and Blan were married May 16, 1970, and following Doug's IBM transfers, lived mostly in Vancouver and Regina. They returned home to Kelowna regularly for holidays, and returned to stay in West Kelowna Estates in 1993. Sadly, soon after their return, Doug began to show the symptoms of Alzheimer's Disease, familiar to his family and in-laws as his father and his mother-in-law, and then his sister and other relations suffered from the same disease. It was particularly hard on Doug as he "knew what was coming." Blan was able to care for Doug with the help of family members until 2005, when he went to live in Brookhaven, MacIntosh unit. In 2009, Doug was moved to Ethel Glen unit in Cottonwoods. Sadly, while Doug was at Brookhaven, Blanche, too, developed symptoms of dementia. It was much more rapid than Alzheimer's, and she, too, was moved into Ethel Glen so that they could still spend some time together. Doug was predeceased by his father and mother, Sam and Jessie Nishi, his wife, Blanche, and his sister, Florence. He is survived by his brother, Ron (Rosie) Nishi, niece, Dawne, brother-in-law, Shun Ishiguro, nephew Kevin (Raelene), Lauren and Justin, niece Andrea Ishiguro (Eric Ronay), Gabriel and Evan, his in-laws Marjorie (John) Beales, Johnny (Joanie), and Benjamin, Meredith, David (Karen), and Annabelle and Helena, and Graham Beales, and Mary (Bruce) Thompson, Laura Martini (Ryan), and Scott Thompson, and many cousins. A sincere thank-you to Doug's caregivers in both Cottonwoods and Brookhaven. You special care-givers know who you are! --- Your caring for Doug and support of his family members has been appreciated so much. A very heart-felt thank-you again to Nola Schweitzer, whose caring warmth befriended Doug over the last four years. No service will be held at this time: a gathering in memory of Doug's life will be held at a later date. Please make any donations in Doug's memory to research on Alzheimer's Disease, or the charity of your choice. Arrangements in care of Springfield Funeral Home, with thanks for their many years of support of families with dementia. ESSIG, Sigrid (SIGI) Dietlinde, nee: Scholl July 24, 1927 - April 27, 2014 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sigi. She leaves behind her husband of 58 years, Niels Essig and daughter Diana Anderson and son-in-law Robert Anderson as well many cherished cousins, nieces, nephews, and other special family members (related and unrelated) and countless friends, too numerous to mention. Sigi will always be remembered as a lady and a "duchess" with great style and class. Anyone who met her immediately loved her. She had a way of putting people at ease, was always interested in other's lives and was quick to smile and give you a warm embrace. She had a quiet strength and limitless energy even up to the last days of her life. Her hair and make-up always done and an outfit that only a designer could put together. She embraced her final days with dignity and grace crossing over to God, at home, and in the arms of her beloved Niels. Having moved to Kelowna in 2002 to be closer to her daughter and son-in-law, it afforded her some of the best years of her life. For the next 12 years, the Grand Hotel would be their walking destination every day where they would stop and have a coffee and tea before walking back to their condo. It quickly became a gathering of neighbours, friends and staff alike. The employees of the Delta Grand and other business owners would soon become like an extended family to them. Sigi loved Kelowna as it reminded her of her life in Germany. She was born in Backnang, a beautiful little town in southern Germany. She would later meet the love of her life, Niels, in the bookstore she worked at in Backnang. They married in 1956 in a small white chapel in Winnipeg, where they would spend the greater part of their life raising their one and only child, Diana. Sigi had an amazing career at Eaton's as a fashion coordinator. She loved her job and the people she worked with and they quickly became part of our extended family. Not only did a full time career consume much of her time, but also their cottage at Lake Winnipeg. One would have to see it to believe the park like setting they created in the middle of the bush. They called it "Haus Waldfrieden" (Peace in the forest). Sigi's love of beauty, nature, flowers, trees, animals and people inspired her throughout her life. She was creative and talented not only with fashion and decorating, as well, she wrote beautiful poetry. We will all miss her warm smile and her kind and generous heart. You will forever be in our hearts. You are now in the arms of God and with your loved ones in Heaven. A special thank you to Dr. Marty Steinruck and Cindy for their great care and loving hearts. As much as Sigi loved her flowers, she would rather you donate to the Kelowna Gospel Mission, Salvation Army or SPCA. She always felt so blessed and wanted to help those in need. A Celebration of Sigi's Life will be held on Tuesday, May 20 at the Delta Grand Hotel at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.springfieldfuneralhome.com 250-860-7077
