GOMES, CESARIO DIAS: (1952-201...
Gomes, Cesario Dias: (1952-2014) It is with deep sadness that the family of Cesario Gomes (Daddio) wishes to announce that he passed away on December 4, 2014, at the Kelowna General Hospital. After many years of being challenged by Multiple Sclerosis, he lost a brief fight to cancer. He was born in Barco, Portugal, November 4, 1952. His family moved to Northern BC in 1958 working in various small communities. He eventually settled himself in Prince George in early 1970. He had so many cherished memories of swimming at Eaglet Lake. After MS got the best of him, he truly missed going 4X4ing in the bush with his children, dancing, renovating houses and biking. He worked at the North Central Plywood in Prince George for many years. He was proud of his last position with Northwood/Canfor as Health and Safety Coordinator. He would laugh contagiously with tears as he shared stories about some of his adventures and other experiences. In Prince George he was quite involved with the Knights of Columbus, St Vincent de Paul Society, Saint John Ambulance, Multiple Sclerosis Society, Handy Circle Promotion Society, and Prince George Special Needs Advisory Committee. He believed in being involved in our communities and making a difference. In 2005, he moved to Westbank to retire but still got involved. He became well known for always being at "Timmies" and wheeling all over town. He will be dearly missed by his wife Jacinthe; mother Beatriz; brother Cesar; daughter Natalie (Tomasz); sons Nathan (Lauren), Peter (Keilee), and Mike (Tess); former wife Renee Gomes, mother of their children; grandchildren: Anna, Jan, Lucas, Jacob and Lincoln; and step-sons Joshua & Jeremy. He was predeceased by his father Jose. His presence, great sense of humour and laughter will be sadly missed by all who knew him. May you rest in Peace and dance in the presence of the LORD. There will be a viewing at 10 am at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church 2547 Hebert Rd, West Kelowna, BC with a Mass at 11:00 am in his honour on December 12, 2014. After the service there will be a burial for family only and then for family and friends, a reception at the Holiday Inn 2569 Dobbin Rd, West Kelowna followed by a tribute to honour Cesario's life at Tim Horton's 2330 Highway 97, Westbank, BC. YOUNG, GORDON MAURICE "MOE": M...
YOUNG, Gordon Maurice "Moe": Moe Young passed into his forever sleep December 8 2014. He is predeceased by his mother and father, Marie Montgomery and John Fredrick Young, his brother Fredrick Young and his first wife Donna Jean. Left behind to celebrate his life are his wife of 30 years Sheila Adams and their blended family Debbie (Nigel), Nancy, Shauna (Dale), Sharon (David), John (Linda), 10 Grandchildren and 2 Great Grandchildren as well as his sister Jean Edwards (91 years young) and her family. Moe started his life in Regina, Saskatchewan March 23, 1928, the youngest in his family. Moe's passion was sports including hockey and golf. Hockey became his primary focus. He first played with the Regina Abbotts as a Junior Hockey player (1942-1945), then the Pats assumed the franchise (1946-1947). He turned professional with the Boston Bruins organization and played for the Tulsa Oilers 1948-1951 then the Tacoma Rockets 1951-52. During that time he suffered one of his many major concussions that included a stick hit to his right eye leading to loss of sight. In the fall of 1952, he went to Trail as playing coach of the Smoke Eaters where he stayed until 1955. In 1956 he moved to Kelowna to join the Packers and stayed with them until 1959. He was one of the major team members during the Packers' eight game tour of Sweden and Russia in November 1958. In1958 the Kelowna Packers won the Western Canadian Championship and made it to the Allan Cup Finals placing runner up to the Belleville McFarlands. Due to the overall achievement in 1958, the Kelowna Packers were selected to carry Canada's name in the International Hockey Exhibitions in Sweden and Russia in November 1958. They were the first Canadian team to play Canada's national game in Russia. And the Packers won the tournament! Moe won many awards during his hockey career. He was second in the WHL total points race in his final year with the Packers in 1959. He won the Most Valuable Player award in 1952 and 1953, and was coach of the WHL all-star team while he was in Trail. The Fans of Trail wanted him so badly a public subscription was taken up to buy his contract from Boston while he was still in Tacoma. When Brian Roche went east to play hockey halfway through the 1960-61 season, Moe took over the Kelowna Junior Buckaroos as coach and lead the league to the final against Kamloops. In November 2008, Moe along with his 1958 Kelowna Packers teammates were the first team to be nominated and selected by the Sports Legacy Committee to the Central Okanagan Sports Hall of Fame Museum in the Team category. During his off season in 1951, Moe won the position as captain of the Willingdon Cup Golf team for Saskatchewan held at the Royal Ottawa Golf Club. Moe was also the non-playing captain of the BC Willingdon Cup gold team in 1953. Moe always felt one of the highlights of his golfing career was playing with Stan Leonard on his Regina Tour at the Wascana Golf and Country Club. When Moe arrived in Kelowna in 1955-56 he joined the Kelowna Golf and Country Club with a 2 handicap. He went on to win the Low Interior Amateur in 1958, the Ogopogo Open and then won the Kelowna Golf and Country Club Open Championship in 1963. Moe was president of the Kelowna Golf and Country Club 1963-1964. Moe had many varied experiences in both work and travel. He sold cars winning the Master Salesmanship Award in BC in the middle 1950s, and was the Sports Director and Local Sales Manager for CHBC, including the nightly sports report. He also tried his hand at being his own boss. Above all he valued his family. We will all carry many happy memories of his keen sense of humor and welcoming home, especially in his many happy years with his amazing wife, Sheila. Moe's family thanks Dr. M. Bobyn for amazing support and to all the wonderful caring folks who looked after Moe at the Good Samaritans Mountainview Village Care home in Kelowna. In keeping with Moe's wishes there will not be a funeral. Moe's immediate family will be gathering at a later date to share many happy stories. In lieu of flower please feel free to make donations to Alzheimer's research or charity of your own choice. BURROUGHS, GEOFFREY CHARLES: A...
BURROUGHS, Geoffrey Charles: August 15, 1918 - December 7, 2014 Following a short and sudden illness, we sadly announce the passing of Geoffrey Charles Burroughs on December 7, 2014. Geoff's passing was peaceful and quiet, surrounded by his loving family. Geoff was the eighth of nine children of Walter and Charlotte Burroughs, born in Alsask, Saskatchewan. He was always a "hands on" kind of guy, who made his own way, on his own terms. As a young boy, Geoff became an avid hunter and he left school at an early age to help support the family. His interest in the "new" automobile led to a trade in mechanics. He also owned and operated the Cariboo Motel in Prince George, BC and later sold real estate in Salmon Arm, BC. He retired in 1980. From the beginning, Geoff loved playing baseball and going to dances at every opportunity. During WWII, Geoff was a member of the Princess Patricia's Light Infantry and he served in artillery, ordinance and transportation. Following the war, Geoff made his way to Penticton, BC, where he met his future wife, Agnes, at a Legion dance in 1951. In his retirement years, Geoff continued to play ball, hunt, fish, curl and attend dances with his loving wife. He enjoyed going south in his motorhome for the winter, attending family reunions, working in his shop, and "playing the slots." At the age of 76, Geoff's Penticton baseball team participated in the Senior Games in West Palm Beach, Florida, a high point for sure. Geoff is survived by his wife, Agnes, of 61 years. He is pre-deceased by his eldest son, Walter, in 2011. He is also survived by his daughter Ann (Dennis), son, Tim (Monica), daughter-in-law, Joan, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Geoff will be laid to rest in the Veterans Section of the Lakeview Cemetery in Penticton, BC. Condolences can be sent and shared by visiting www.HansonsFuneral.ca

GILCHRIST, LAVERNE NORMAN: WE ...
GILCHRIST, Laverne Norman: We are sad to announce the death of Laverne Gilchrist on December 9, 2014, after a long and happy life. Laverne was predeceased by his beloved wife Illa; parents Bill and Verda; granddaughter Shauna Reist; and siblings Ruth Reevie, Forrest (Bud), and Melvin (Bill). He is survived by his children Nadeen (Bob) Reist, Bruce (Peg), Dennis (Leah), and Ross (Janet); 10 grandchildren Kim, Joelle, Vaughn, Kara, Kaelee, Brad, Trevor, Alisha, Riley, and Carter; 13 great-grandchildren who will miss Grandpa GG; brothers Scotty (Shirley), Dutch (Arvella), and Jim (Carol); and his nieces and nephews. Laverne was born in Milestone on March 19, 1924 and was raised on the family farm. He was passionate about both land and sky. He was happy driving a tractor or truck during seeding and harvest, and was the last grain buyer for the P&H elevator in Milestone. At age 57, he lived a lifelong dream and became a pilot, spending many hours flying his own plane. Laverne and Illa retired to Kelowna, where they spent 15 happy years. After Illa's death in September 2005, Laverne moved to Regina in March 2006. He spent many hours over coffee with the Southland Senators at Southland Mall, solving the world's problems before the real senators were even out of bed. Over the past few years, Laverne's life was changed by the effects of dementia. It robbed him of his memory, but it also opened a new and softer side. He saw goodness in the simplest things: the wide-open skies, the prairie sunset, a child at play, dogs walking the paths of Wascana Park. Somehow life became very simple - he saw only the beauty. Our family is so grateful for the care and attention Dad received in his last years, at Marion Chateau and at Brightwater of Riverbend. Dennis and Leah have been there through the good and the difficult, and as their family we are so thankful. Memorial Service will be at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 13, 2014 at Milestone Alliance Church, Main Street, Milestone, SK. Flowers gratefully declined. Donations in Laverne's memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan. Arrangements entrusted to Paragon Funeral & Cremation Services, 306-359-7776.
